I-Beam: A steel joist or girder with short flanges and a cross section formed like the letter I.

I-Joist: Any of a number of small, I shaped, parallel beams of timber, steel, reinforced concrete, etc., for supporting floors, ceilings, or the like.

ID (Inside Diameter): The diameter of the inside of a pipe.

IIC: The system used by the Federal Housing Administration recommending criteria for impact sound insulation.

Incandescent Lamp: An electric lamp in which a filament is heated to incandescence by an electric current.

Incompatibility: Unable to exist together in harmony.

Indemnification Clause: Provision to provide compensation for actual loss or damage or for trouble and annoyance.

Index: Something that directs attention to some fact, condition, etc.; a guiding principle.

Infiltration: The process of some type of matter entering another substance.

Inlet: A place of admission; entrance.

INR (Impact Noise Rating): An estimate of the sound insulating performance of a floor-ceiling assembly.

Inside Corner: The space at which two walls form an angle in a room.

Inside Drain: A drain positioned on a roof at some location other than the perimeter to drains surface water inside the building to a drainage system.

Insulating Glass: A window in which two panes of glass are sealed with air space between them.

Insulating Glass Unit: Two or more panes of glass spaced apart and hermetically sealed to form a single unit with an air space between each pane.

Insulation: A material that reduces or prevents the transmission of heat or sound or electricity.

Insulation Board: A building board made of coarse wood or cane fiber.

Interest: Such a sum expressed as a percentage of money borrowed to be paid over a given period, usually one year.

Interior Finish: Material used in covering the interior of walls and ceilings of a structure.

Interior Glazed: Glazing performed on the inside the building.

Interlayer: A layer placed between other layers.

Interlocking Shingles: Shingles that mechanically fasten together to provide wind resistance.

Interply: A layer between two other layers of roofing felts that have been bonded together.

IPS (Iron Pipe Size): A Pipe thread sizing system.

IRMA [Insulated (or Inverted) Roof Membrane Assembly]: A system whereas the roof membrane is laid directly on the roof deck, covered with foam insulation and ballasted with stone.

Irrigation: To supply dry land with water by means of ditches, pipes, or streams; water artificially.
